Kalkan is a town on the Turkish Mediterranean coast. This is an ancient fishing village. Most of the surrounding area is undeveloped. Until 1970 it was an important seaport. But after construction of Fethiye road its importance as a harbor port declined. Now it has emerged as a tourist. In the absence of mass tourism, Kalkan resort town has remained unspoilt and is a charming town on the brilliant blue sea coast. It is tightly coiled at the foot of the Taurus Mountains overlooking the beautiful bay.
Kalkan's economy is now totally dependent on tourism. The city is proud and carefully preserved its historic character Ottoman Greek architecture. Kalkan village has preserved the old historic architectural style. The houses line up the narrow winding streets from the port. The houses are often covered with bougainvillea of different colors and they look so pretty. Most houses are two storeys and is built of stone. They often have courtyards and gardens. The houses are built to keep cool in summer. Windows and balconies on upper floors open out toward the sea, so get the cool sea breeze. Earth floors are commonly used for shops or for storage, accommodation is generally on the first floor. You notice decorative elements on the sills between floors and on top of windows.
Good dining has always been a tradition of Kalkan and this is reflected in the very large number of restaurants in Kalkan, in fact it is said, Kalkan has probably the highest number of restaurants per capita compared to other Turkish coastal towns. Roof terrace restaurants and bars of Kalkan is known in Turkey, it is so nice to sit at one of these port side restaurants and watch pleasure boats and fishermen in their work in the morning, or to see them back in the evening with their catch of fish.
Tourists generally spend days sometimes a walk along the bay and marina. Swimming, diving and snorkeling in the bay quite enjoyable. There are many boat trips also available. By night Kalkan transforms into a bustling city that is so much you can do. There is shopping, restaurants and generally strolling around at the sea side or do window shopping. In the evening comes alive with stores in T-shirts, boxes of Turkish delight, silver jewelry sold. Turkish carpets are famous for their design and craftsmanship, and many shops selling carpets. Tourists find a lot of typical old-style Turkish items to buy.
Tourists and visitors to Kalkan village come to enjoy the relaxed casual lifestyle in this Turkish sanctuary. There are a few good hotels catering to tourists.
